As Jeremy left the hotel and entered the dense downtown traffic, his mind went back over the two most recent encounters with his vajra. Over the previous four years, these experiences had assumed an almost normal pattern.

As if anything about the artifact could be classed as normal.

These most recent events, however, had broken from the norm.

The first had been just another visit, happening every three or four months, asking the same questions as usual. Was there an investment opportunity he should take on. Was there any danger he needed to guard against, like that.

For the first time ever, the three responses had not contained any steps regarding investments or profit. Instead, they had all carried the same message: an urgent need to focus.

The first image: a woman, Crystal Dumont, was tracking him.

The second: he contacted a security agent named Eric Bannon.

And then came the shocker. Him and Shara meeting on the Riverwalk, Jeremy using an actress and her son as cover. Because Shara had called him. After four long years.

His second usage of the vajra had taken place immediately following his contact with Shara.

Jeremy had gone straight to the downtown Jacksonville bank where the vajra was held in a safety deposit box. The vault also contained a dozen private alcoves. Each narrow closet was lined, floors and walls and ceiling, with a beige material that sucked out all sound. Visitors sealed themselves inside and worked on whatever their boxes held.

That afternoon Jeremy had pulled out the artifact and asked the question. How to save Shara and her family.

The next morning, during that in-between space just before dawn, Jeremy’s experience followed the standard pattern: he stood on the pearl sand in the predawn light, staring at a crystal globe larger than he was tall, glowing with that pastel illumination. And then it had flowed forward, and consumed him, and revealed…

This time, there had been just two images.

In the first, he was seated in an oceanfront hotel penthouse, across from an elegant Indian gentleman in his late fifties, named Arjun Kerala.

In the second…

Jeremy met personally his tracker. The woman Crystal Dumont.

She was, in a word, stunningly beautiful. For an instant the image had centered upon her gaze, eyes that resembled emeralds smashed to shards by violent blows of life’s hammer. The image then moved back far enough for Jeremy to take in their surroundings. They were seated at a picnic table he did not recognize. It was in a residential area of old sixties-era houses, with heavy foliage and the slow-motion feel of old Florida.

Jeremy had then watched himself tell her everything. He had dropped his shields and revealed his heart. To a woman who was not Shara.

So as Jeremy drove away from the hotel and his reunion with the married couple, all he felt was a troubled curiosity. As if a destiny he could not identify was there in the passenger seat. Smiling at his confusion. Readying to invade a life he could scarcely call his own.
